The Impact of Trauma on Neurobiology and AttachmentPresented by:
Maria Muzik, MD
Childhood abuse may have long-lasting adverse consequences for brain development and functioning, as well as impair the establishment of secure attachment bonds with caregivers. Children who are exposed to trauma early in life show alterations in their stress coping and capacity for emotion regulation, and are more likely to develop psychopathology later in their life. This workshop will present an overview of current literature on the relations between childhood abuse or neglect and child neurobiology and attachment. Case vignettes derived from an ongoing study on maternal intrusive parenting (in the context of maternal psychopathology) impacting infant stress and emotion regulation and toddler attachment security will be used to illustrate and supplement the theoretical background.
