Beginning in 2003, Early On purchased both hearing and vision screening equipment, which was distributed to local service areas. The equipment is intended to help Early On service areas screen hearing and vision for children referred to Early On, in the event that Early On cannot obtain the federally required information about the status of hearing and vision from the child's health care provider.

Training is available to professionals who work with Early On, who will regularly screen hearing and vision for children who have been referred to Early On for eligibility determination. The training is not designed for the screening of children 3 years and older, and may not supplant the screenings mandated by State of Michigan Public Health Code and provided by the Local Health Department. Children age 3 and older are screened using a different protocol and different equipment, more appropriate for their age and development.

Training to use the Early On equipment is offered at no charge by the Hearing and Vision Consultants from Michigan Department of Community Health. Each training is offered separately, with registration for each day. Each training (1 day for hearing, 1 for vision) is approximately 6 hours long, includes background, didactic, and practicum. Capacity for each training is 10 participants.

Participants must bring their own instruments, extension cord w/ 3 prong adapter, and disposables: probe tips, printer paper, wet wipes.

The instruments should have been calibrated or serviced within the last 18 months. Batteries charged (plugged in overnight prior to training).

In order to participate in this training, supervisors of participants must submit a signed letter of support. EOT&TA will email a sample of this letter of support to participants once they have registered.

A Certificate will be granted to those who fully participate in and successfully complete the training.
