Session I
“Relationship Development in Pregnancy and Early Postpartum:
An Infant Mental Health Perspective”
Presented by: Priscilla Tait MS, CNM, IMH-E® (IV)
The relationship between a mother and her baby begins when the woman discovers she is pregnant. The formation of maternal identity and maternal/fetal attachment is a journey of complex emotional and psychological events. In this series of seminars we will discuss the process of relationship development during pregnancy and the early postpartum period and will identify factors that may disturb or obstruct this process. We will explore the relationship between very early relationship difficulties and subsequent behavioral problems in infants and toddlers. We will share strategies to support the pregnant woman who is experiencing difficulty making the transition to becoming a nurturing mother. We will also reflect upon our own emotions that are stirred when a pregnant woman behaves in a way that is not nurturing or protective of her unborn child.
