This webinar, sponsored by the Early On® Center for Higher Education, is particularly geared toward college and university level faculty teaching in professional preparation programs whose graduates may work with families and children within the context of early intervention and inclusive early childhood programs. The webinar is relevant to faculty in diverse departments such as physical and occupational therapy; speech and language pathology; social work; pediatric nursing; early childhood education, and related fields.

Rationale

Faculty at both the under graduate and graduate level must consider numerous national and state requirements and standards in their course designs. Part C, the component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that focuses on children from birth to age three, is often a minor, if not, overlooked topic in the professional preparation programs. Students are typically not provided the opportunity to collaborate and work with providers from different disciplines until after graduation. This webinar will demonstrate how future providers from different disciplines can experience learning and working together at the pre-service level.

Content

In this webinar, Dr. Jennifer Kilgo and Dr. Jerry Aldridge, authors and early childhood/early childhood special education faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), will describe how for the past ten year, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, along with a consortium of other Alabama colleges, succeeded in embedding a course on “early intervention/education, transdisciplinary teaming, and diversity” which is required in the curriculum of separate disciplines. This year long course brings together students from diverse disciplines who study together in the same classroom at the same time, discussing case studies, sharing resources, and learning how to understand, respect, and negotiate different discipline perspectives as they support families. This course, required for students from early childhood special education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and other early intervention related fields, offers students from diverse disciplines “real-life” experiences in transdisciplinary work at the pre-service level.

Jennifer and Jerry will showcase instructional activities, readings, team scenarios, as well as share lessons learned. This webinar will provide insights and vision of how Michigan can strengthen knowledge of the transdisciplinary model and Early On philosophy at the pre-service level.
