This is a quarterly advisory meeting of the Early On Center for Higher Education. We will include an update on our 2014 Colloquium, discuss projects and activities of the EO Center, and share resources.
Featuring Professional Development:
Claire Vallotton, PhD, Assistant Professor of Human Development & Family Studies, Michigan State University will present at the Advisory Group Meeting, Using Backwards Design to Align our Goals, Assessments, and Curricula: An Exercise in Reflective Practice in our own College Classrooms.
Claire Vallotton will introduce the concept of Backwards Design – a method for aligning goals, assessments, and curricula to achieve the student leaning outcomes that are most important to us. She will describe the current work of the Collaborative for Understanding the Pedagogy of Infant/toddler Development (CUPID) – a cross-university collaborative which is applying the principles of backwards design in order to understanding and enhance the learning outcomes of the future infant/toddler workforce. As an authentic working example of Backwards Design, we will review the Competencies framework drafted by CUPID to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed work effectively with infants, toddlers, and their families. Together we will review and refine several of the Competencies related to working effectively with infants/toddlers with delays or disabilities, then determine as set of indicators that students have achieved these learning objectives. Finally, we will reflect on the process of undertaking Backwards Design and its effects on our own practice as instructors.
