This workshop will examine Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in young children. Presentation will include "inside out" perspective and discussion
of ASD from developmental, relational and transdisciplinary perspectives. Autism diagnostic criteria and prevalence over the past 30 years will be reviewed and recent findings from brain sciences will be considered. An interpersonal model of emotional and social development will be presented and participants will delve
into understanding the neurosensory system. Participants will learn about the socio-cultural context of disability and the emerging field of "neurodiversity.” Principles to support full inclusion will be examined and participants will learn about Universal Design for Learning and ways to support engagement and learning. A template for describing a child's "unique profile" will be presented. Strategies to support “transformational thinking” about ASD will be discussed, as well as review of reflective practices.
